Fernando del Solar was born in Valladolid, Spain in 1951. He is a Spanish composer and pianist. He began his musical studies at the age of six and continued his education at the Madrid Royal Conservatory where he studied composition with Fernando Trueba and piano with Manuel de Falla. In 1973, he won First Prize at the International Mozart Competition in Salzburg. Later that year, he received the Granada Music Prize for his composition El canto de los ciegos.
Del Solar has written over eighty pieces of music including eight symphonies, six string quartets, five operas, four ballets, two screenplays, and many chamber works. His most popular works include Cavalli’s Opera Il trovatore (1987), L’Africaine (1988), La traviata (1999), Don Giovanni (2003), Carmen (2009) and Aida (2011).
